what the work of gifted Saints does

The fifth principle is this: the work of gifted Saints builds up the church. Ephesians 4:12 continues, "...and build up the church, the body of Christ." It's really quite simple and I mentioned a couple truths in my previous post. It's the fruitful work of gifted Saints that will build a church, not necessarily just the strategic initiatives and BHAGs of the paid, professional, seminary-trained leaders. Let's say that Joe Saint has a gift and calling to start a ministry for seniors. The professional pastor could sit down with Joe Saint and tell him how to do it and then keep him accountable. This will definitely build the church. A better way, however, is for Joe Saint to be released to reach the people he can reach, in a way that only he can. The church is built up in many ways: numerical growth--more people are coming, cultural growth--people reaching people is the way "things are done around here," health is growing--what's healthier than to live and minister in a place that values you for who you are and let's you do what you're called to do?
Notice an important phrase in our passage: the body of Christ. It is important for the Saints to see whatever ministry they are involved in as vital church work. it is easy as leaders to focus primarily on the Sunday morning crowd or the ministries that reach the primary age group and culture. Yet, whatever ministry the Saints are involved in should be viewed as vital church work! Here are some more suggestions for Practical Application:

• regularly recognize/celebrate/appreciate all areas of ministry--even those often overlooked ones
• allows others to do ministry in their style and method. Let them make mistakes and run with the ministry.
• help your church foster a sense of "grass roots" initiatives--people reaching people
